Motorcycle.com: S1000RR Motorcycle of the Year

bmws1000rr-02

http://www.motorcycle.com/ selects the BMW S 1000 RR as the MOTORCYCLE  OF THE YEAR!

“After years of incremental increases in performance among sportbikes, along comes a fresh player to shake things up in the literbike world in a way we haven’t seen for more than a decade when the first-gen R1 debuted. BMW stepped into the fray against long-established Japanese players which have been building big transverse inline-Fours for decades. But the German brand came out swinging with a stupendous 175-plus horsepower at its rear wheel, blowing its Asian veterans out of the water by resetting a very high bar. The potential of BMW’s RR is best displayed in the World Superstock championship (closer to stock than World Superbike) where it has gone undefeated and has already wrapped up the class title.”

Free S 1000 RR Safety Package for Active Duty Military Personnel
The World’s Fastest Superbike is also the Safest

“The greatest testament to the rider aids the S1000RR has introduced is that not one bike was crashed throughout the press event that witnessed 160 journalists sampling the machine.” – Cycle World

BMW Motorrad USA is delighted to launch a promotion to help our active-duty servicemen and women ride more safely.  Active* military personnel who purchase a new BMW S 1000 RR from August 19, 2010 until December 31, 2010, will receive a free safety package including Race ABS  & Dynamic Traction Control worth $1,480 from BMW Motorrad USA.

The number of accidents, injuries, and deaths among US military personnel has been an issue of great concern throughout the U.S. armed forces.  BMW Motorrad USA’s performance riding training partner the California Superbike School (CSS) is actively involved in providing training to the U.S. Marine Corps to help reduce the number of Marines that are injured and killed in motorcycle accidents.

This year, CSS switched from rival 600 Supersport motorcycles to the BMW S 1000 RR. Despite having 80 more horsepower, the number of student crashes on track has declined by 58%.  While the tracks, training, and students haven’t changed, the safety features of the S 1000 RR have led to a significant reduction in accidents.

The new BMW S 1000 RR is not only the most powerful production bike on the planet, it’s also the safest, thanks to the cutting-edge electronic rider aids Race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control.  No other motorcycle from any manufacturer offers this unique combination of safety features.

To show our gratitude and appreciation to our men and women in uniform for their service to our country BMW now offers them our safety package on the S 1000 RR for free.  The result will be safer riders, fewer accidents and greater protection against harm to those who protect us.

BMW S 1000 RR Clinches Three “Best of” Honors in U.S.

P90065530

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – August 13, 2010… In its debut year, the BMW S 1000 RR superbike has earned three superlative awards from the U.S. media. Robb Report named the BMW S 1000 RR the best sportbike in its annual “Best of the Best” issue in June. In July, Cycle World followed suit by awarding the BMW S 1000 RR “Best Superbike for 2010″; and in the September issue of Motorcyclist, editors chose the BMW S 1000 RR for its coveted “Motorcycle of the Year” Award.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this type of recognition from these well-respected publications,” commented Pieter de Waal, Vice President, BMW Motorrad USA. “The positive response we’ve had from the motorcycling community reaffirms our commitment to continually raise the bar for performance and value in this competitive market segment.”

According to editors of the Robb Report, “the BMW S 1000 RR is perhaps the greatest motorcycle-branding success story of the last 10 years. From the moment that the S 1000 RR made the leap from the drafting board to the showroom floor, the sportbike transformed existing perceptions of the Bavarian brand, winning over a new generation of enthusiasts.”

Cycle World editors offered similar praise after test riding the bike at Spain’s Aragon racetrack, commenting “On the road in our own little fiesta of speed, we found it almost as refined and comfortable as the established superbike players. And just to rub it in, the base-model BMW is actually a bit cheaper than some of its Japanese equivalents…As both an introductory effort and a portent of that it’s likely unleashed in the marketplace, the BMW’s the most beautiful thing to blow out of Bavaria since Beethoven.”

In its annual “Motorcycle of the Year” issue, editors of Motorcyclist wrote, “To call it a good first effort doesn’t begin to do it justice. It flat out raises the bar. Yet it does so in a way that is inimitably, undeniably BMW.”

BMW Motorrad launched its most anticipated new sport bike in recent history at Italy’s famed Monza racetrack, during the World Superbike race weekend, in May 9, 2009. When it arrived in U.S. dealerships in January 2010, a significant number had already been sold to customers through a successful pre-sale program. The S 1000 RR, weighing only 404 lbs and delivering a massive 193 hp, is one of the most potent, sophisticated and lightest sport bikes ever produced. It holds the distinction of being the most powerful production 1000cc sport bike in the world and has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $13,800.

In addition to the class-leading power plant, the BMW S 1000 RR possesses new technical features, such as the first-ever four-stage Race ABS system with settings for Rain, Sport, Race and Slick conditions. The groundbreaking new ABS system weighs only about 5.5 lbs complete — nearly 20 lbs lighter than the competition.

Magny Cours belongs to BMW Motorrad France riders

magny1magny2

Magny Cours circuit in France has been the scene of some legendary endurance racing battles over recent years with BMW Motorrad and its HP2 Sport at the ‘Bol d’Or’ – arguably the world’s most famous endurance race. But that was then and this is now, and last weekend it was the turn of the S 1000 RR to be in the spotlight at the 4.2-kilometre circuit, where BMW riders Erwan Nigon and Sébastien Gimbert both enjoyed victories in the French Superbike Championship.

The two BMW Motorrad France team riders put themselves in a strong position right from the start of the racing weekend at Magny Cours. During Saturday’s qualifying session it was the two RR riders who qualified first and second on the grid, with Erwan Nigon posting a scorching time of 1:39.579, closely followed by Sébastien’s time of 1:39.990.

In fact, the two team-mates were the only riders to qualify with times under the 1 minute, 40 second bracket. To put this in perspective, the times achieved during last year’s Superbike World Championship round at the same circuit were 1:37.709 by Ben Spies on the factory Superbike and 1:41.722 by Xavier Simeon in the Superstock 1000 class. It will be interesting to compare these times when the 2010 World Superbike circus arrives for its final round of the year during the first weekend of October. Erwan’s best lap last weekend was quick enough to earn him his fourth pole position of the season on his #7 RR.

However, in the first race on the Sunday, things didn’t go to plan for the championship leader, who made a rare mistake and crashed out of contention on the first lap. Fortunately, he wasn’t injured, but he wasn’t able to get back on the bike and continue in this race.

However, his team-mate Sébastien Gimbert was in the ideal position to take over at the front and used all his experience and racecraft to take the victory by more than two-and-a-half seconds in front of official Kawasaki and Suzuki riders Julien Da Costa and Freddy Foray. Meanwhile, Erwan Nigon’s damaged RR was being repaired as quickly as possible by his team so that he was able to enter the second Superbike race in the afternoon.

Fortunately, Erwan made it to the starting grid in time alongside his team-mate Sébastien for race two. He also managed to take the victory in front of his team-mate in what turned out to be an eventful and tough race, with lots of crashes and a re-start because of an engine blowing up on a Ducati. The two BMW riders put on a great show for the spectators, swapping the lead several times, although making sure that there were no mistakes in this important fight for the team’s first French Superbike Championship title.

Thanks to the efforts of the riders, and the great technical support and excellent tyres from partner Michelin Competition, these superb results for the BMW Motorrad France team mean that Erwan Nigon is currently leading the 2010 rider standings on 209 points, with team-mate Sébastien Gimbert on 188 – that’s 47 points ahead of nearest challenger Julien Da Costa. After the traditional summer break, the next round of the French Superbike Championship will take place on 4 and 5 September at the historic Le Mans circuit, where it is hoped that the two RR riders will take another important step to securing the first French Superbike Championship title for BMW Motorrad France.

S 1000 RR: The New Generation of Drag Bike

brock1brock2

What a drag!

The dynamic and powerful S 1000 RR has stunned the motorcycle world with its class-leading power in a package that can dominate on the track and also be equally at home on the road.

In the USA, American Brock Davidson saw a very different potential in the RR. The class-leading power and dynamic chassis could well be turned into a very potent weapon in a class of racing that is measured in micro components of time – drag racing.

Brock Davidson heads up Brock’s Performance in Dayton, Ohio. He founded this company in 2002 with the aim of creating engineering excellence for both road and track. Brock’s performance-enhancing products like BST carbon fibre wheels, titanium exhaust system and the extended swingarms have helped create a unique BMW quarter-mile sprinter. As well as the extended wheelbase bike there is the ‘Stock’ version. Depending on the rules of the competition, either or both can have track time over a weekend.

Both produce 203hp (at the rear wheel) with their Dynojet PCV fuel injection module and modified mapping to match Brock’s beautifully produced exhaust system. It is not only in the way this machine looks that the BMW impresses. The standard version has hit the finish line at 8.95 seconds while the 1663.7 mm wheelbase bike has managed a very impressive 8.497 seconds in the ¼ with both reaching trap speeds approaching 257 km/h. The long-wheelbase bike also boasts a 0-200 km/h reading of just 5.2 seconds!

The first outing for the Brock’s Performance RR was at an AMA meeting in Michigan, with Ryan Schnitz in the seat. The extended swingarm model had the crowd stunned. Here was the fastest bike of its class in the world and this was its first trip up the strip! For Brock it was a vindication of his original hunch:

“The BMW has a better power-to weight ratio than any bike we have ever run and we can see it not only grabbing the headlines but riders looking for performance – be it on the drag strip, track or indeed the road. There is no better way to develop specialist parts than in competition,” said Brock at the end of a successful weekend.

The stunning debut had four-times AMA National Champion, Keith Dennis signing on as team rider and he had the standard wheelbase version in action at a recent event in Alabama where, again, the RR stood out.

“We are going to further develop the BMW with nitrous injection for ‘Real Street’ competition and do more work on engine hard-part development after we see what it can take in pure stock form,” says Brock. “So far, the engine has been stronger than anything we have been able to throw at it from a normally aspirated standpoint. We have ‘torture tested’ both of these bikes like no others on the dyno and racetracks during accelerated product development and performance testing, and they are extremely impressive. Every component has been engineered to the highest standards, but nitrous oxide is an entirely different beast that was not in the original BMW design criteria, so it’s our job as an aftermarket manufacturer to take it from here to please the stupid fast crowd,” said Brock, with an eye to the future.

It is not only on the strip where heads are turned. “We are always very busy at our display area, where the BMW always creates a storm of interest. We were at the recent World Superbike meet at Salt Lake City in the BMW Motorrad area and did that grab us some interest!” said Brock.

Drag racing might not have been on the BMW Motorrad agenda but thanks to Brock Davidson the S 1000 RR now has a new area of motor sport in which to display its unique style and dynamic power.

Around the world with the S 1000 RR

untitled-1-copy

In only its second season in the Superbike World Championship, the S 1000 RR is already having a big impact. Furthermore, all around the world, motorcycle racers are discovering that BMW’s new Superbike has exactly what it takes – straight out of the box – to win races. Here’s a summary of BMW S 1000 RR success so far in 2010…

WSBK
The thousands of passionate BMW fans that gathered at the historic Monza circuit early in May and who were watching around the world were in for a treat, as BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Troy Corser achieved the team’s first ever World Superbike podium. After a four-way battle at the front between himself, Max Biaggi, Leon Haslam and Cal Crutchlow at the high-speed circuit, Corser secured his 129th WSBK podium – but importantly – the first ever for the S 1000 RR and BMW Motorrad Motorsport.

Since then, Corser has gone on to record another podium finish – at Misano at the end of June – as well as achieving the team’s first ever pole position. Roll on Silverstone in August…

Superstock 1000 FIM Cup
After six rounds of 10 in this year’s Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, the S 1000 RR has been in a class of its own with BMW Motorrad Team Italia’s Ayrton Badovini being equally Unstoppable in this important race series that supports the Superbike World Championship at all its European rounds.

Six convincing wins from six races so far in 2010 means that Badovini currently has a maximum 150 points in the rider standings – currently more than twice that of second-placed rider Michael Magnoni. His team-mate Daniele Beretta also showed his potential by finishing on the podium in Monza and finishing fourth in Brno, elevating him to tenth in the standings.

With these impressive results, BMW leads the Manufacturers Standings by a clear margin over distant challengers Honda and Suzuki. The Superstock 1000 FIM Cup returns at the beginning of September at Silverstone. Who would bet against Badovini securing the championship at this round?

France
After four rounds of the 2010 French Superbike Championship, it’s success all the way for BMW Motorrad France team riders Erwan Nigon and Sébastien Gimbert. After 8 races out of 14, their race results on the track prove conclusively just what the BMW S 1000 RR is capable of in the right hands: After five wins, two second places and a third place, Nigon tops the points table with 184 (out of a possible 200). Team-mate Sébastien Gimbert is second on 143 points, with one win, five second places, a fifth and ninth place to his credit.

The two BMW riders have done incredibly well so far this year and now both occupy strong positions at the top of the championship, which means that BMW Motorrad France is extremely confident for the forthcoming rounds of the 2010 French Superbike Championship, which continues at Magny-Cours on the 17th and 18th of July.

Spain
The 2010 ‘CEV Buckler’ Spanish Superbike Championship has completed just four rounds so far in 2010, but BMW S 1000 RR rider Javier Forés is already staking his title ambitions by securing four consecutive victories so far in 2010 for the Motorrad Competicion team.

In the ‘Stock Extreme’ class, the Valencian rider’s maximum points gives him an advantage of 40 points over Ducati rider Xavier Del Amor. His team-mates Enrique Rocamora and Alberto Lopez are fourth and seventh in the overall championship standings.

These great results from the Motorrad Competition team have helped extend BMW’s lead in the Manufacturer Standings. Despite this being the first time that the S 1000 RR has competed in this championship, BMW currently has 155 points, 76 more than the nearest manufacturer Ducati, with the Japanese manufacturers trailing even further behind. The next race takes place at Albacete on 12 September.

Germany
Belgian rider Werner Daemen recently scored a double victory at the Salzburgring on his BMW S 1000 RR in a successful weekend of racing in the German Superbike Championship (IDM).

The Team alpha Technik - van Zon - BMW rider performed flawlessly and elevated himself to second place in the overall points table. His pole position, two race wins, fastest lap and a podium from his team-mate Barry Veneman also means that the BMW team is now leading the Manufacturers Standings by 28 points over KTM, with Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki rounding out the top five.

The next round of the 2010 IDM German Superbike Championship will take place on the first weekend of August at the Schleizer triangle.

Australia
Lap record, top qualifier and two race wins. That’s not bad for only the second outing on a new bike and a considerable achievement for Craig Coxhell and the CJC Racing S 1000 RR team at Round 3 of the Australian Superbike Championship, held at Queensland Raceway in Australia’s Sunshine State.

In the team’s first outing in Darwin they’d managed to get inside the top ten in the Superbike class on a practically standard and untested bike. With the bike in Superstock trim and unsure of when new parts would be available, the team decided to switch to the Superstock class. In doing so, they still managed to finish 6th and 7th outright – winning the Superstock class in both races – and were also the first Superstock bike to get into Superpole shoot-out in the history of this qualifying format in Australia.

This was the first podium for BMW in Australia on the new S 1000 RR but definitely not the last. The championship continues on August 20-22 back at Queensland Raceway.

UK
In the 2010 British Superbike Championship EVO class (which allows homologated machines with full Superbike racing rolling chassis, but ‘stock’ engines in order to keep costs manageable), Jentin Racing – BMW Motorrad rider Steve Brogan is second in the overall points standings after six of 12 rounds having scored five race wins so far.

In the Metzeler Superstock 1000 national championship, the S 1000 RR is again in front with Jon Kirkham leading the 2010 series by 34 points, with two race wins and three third places to his credit. Other BMW riders battling in this competitive series include Tristan Palmer – who has scored two podiums and is currently forth in the championship – and former BMW BoxerCup rider Richard ‘Cooperman’ Cooper.

Canada
Along with many other markets worldwide, BMW Motorrad Canada is fielding an S 1000 RR team in its own national superbike championship. Both riders from BMW’s 2009 race team – Francis Martin and Michael Ferreira – are the riders hoping to bring a superbike victory to BMW Motorrad Canada in 2010 and after five rounds of this year’s series, Francis Martin is getting close. The former double Canadian Superbike Champion has finished on the podium four times in five races and currently lies second in the overall points, with team-mate Ferreira in sixth.

The final two rounds of this year’s series will take place from 5-8 August at Shubenacadie in Nova Scotia, so here’s hoping that Francis Martin gets his first victory on the S 1000 RR.

Northern Ireland
In June, Scottish rider Keith Amor scored a stunning victory in the North West 200 Superstock race on a BMW S 1000 RR. Held in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, this race takes place on public roads running between the three seaside towns of Portstewart, Coleraine and Portrush, and is one of the fastest in the world, with top speeds up to 204 mph (328 km/h) recorded through the speed trap.

Thirty-eight-year-old Amor from Falkirk in central Scotland rode a BMW S 1000 RR to victory for the WA Corless/Jackson Racing team – his first ever International road race win and the first on public roads for the S 1000 RR. Keith also rode a BMW S 1000 RR in the event’s two ‘Superbike’ races, finishing in fourth and sixth places respectively, recording 195mph (313.8 km/h) through the speed trap.

Elsewhere…
All around the world, BMW S 1000 RRs are being raced in various championships. In Argentina, René Zanatta is racing in the national Superbike championship, while Daniel Cassano and Mariano Cordasco are racing the BMW in the ‘Stock Bikes’ category.

In the USA, the vast area covered means that many riders are restricted to regional, rather than national championships, but as you can imagine, there is a lot of activity and success going on stateside – enough to bring you a whole story in the near future!

Cycle World Picks the S1000RR as the Best Superbike of 2010

ten_best_bikes_2010

From Cycle World:
Let’s see. It makes 176.4 horsepower—21 more, on the official CW dyno, than the next closest bike in its class. At Spain’s MotoGP-hosting Motorland Aragon racetrack for MasterBike (CW, June), it destroyed all liter-bike comers. On the road in our own little fiesta of speed, we found it almost as refined and comfortable as the established superbike players. And just to rub it in, the base-model BMW is actually a bit cheaper than some of its Japanese equivalents. Or jack the price up a few grand with the addition of Dynamic Traction Control, ABS and even an honest-to-goodness quick-shifter. As both an introductory effort and a portent of what it’s likely unleashed in the marketplace, this BMW’s the most beautiful thing to blow out of Bavaria since Beethoven. Cue superbike WWIII.

BMW S 1000 RR and private teams enjoy worldwide success

Munich/Stephanskirchen, 9th July 2010.

With two podium finishes and the first pole position for the Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport in the 2010 FIM Superbike World Championship, the BMW S 1000 RR has proven its potential in impressive style. However, the bike has also established itself as a true success model in many other international and national championships.

Last weekend, Werner Daemen from Team alpha Technik-Van Zon BMW celebrated an double victory at the Salzburgring (AT) in the German Superbike Championship (IDM), repeating his 2009 success. The Belgian now occupies second place in the Riders’ Championship with 159 points. His team-mate, Barry Veneman (NL), is currently in fourth (117 points). BMW Motorrad heads the manufacturers’ championship with 281 points. The brand was represented by a total of eight riders at the Salzburgring.

“Werner Daemen’s two victories were impressive – and they are just two of countless triumphs already achieved by our customer teams with the BMW S 1000 RR,” says BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, Berthold Hauser. “We are in contact with a lot of teams around the world, who send a total of 120 BMW S 1000 RR bikes into action. We offer them support regarding the use of the bikes. However, this knowledge and experience transfer does not just work in one direction. We also incorporate the know-how gained by our customers around the world into our development work in the Superbike World Championship and our production development. This exchange is extremely important for everyone involved. It goes without saying that we are all delighted with the way the BMW S 1000 RR has established itself at the top of international motorcycle racing within such a short time.”

The Superstock 1000 FIM Cup is held at World Championship races in Europe. BMW Motorrad currently boasts an impressive record this season: Ayrton Badovini (IT) from BMW Motorrad Italia STK has won all six races so far, thus leading the Riders’ Championship with a maximum 150 points. It is a similar story in many other international series. BMW Motorrad riders head the championships in France (Erwan Nigon), Great Britain (Jon Kirkham) and Spain (Javier Fores Querol). Furthermore, BMW S 1000 RR bikes have also tasted success in Australia, Italy, Canada and the United States.

The support that private teams receive from BMW Motorrad Motorsport is multifaceted. From track-specific configuration of the electronic control unit, which in most cases is based on the unit used on the production bike, to the optimisation of the traction control to suit the tyre being used: the experts in Munich and Stephanskirchen are available at any time to offer customers advice and assistance.

Daemen ‘does the double’ at the Salzburgring!

damien1

damien2

Belgian rider Werner Daemen scored a double victory on his BMW S 1000 RR at rounds 9 and 10 of the German Superbike Championship (IDM) at the Salzburgring circuit on 4 July.

In front of more than 15,000 spectators at the famous Austrian circuit, the Team alpha Technik - van Zon - BMW rider performed flawlessly and rode two fantastic races to score maximum points and elevate himself to second place in the overall points table, just 9 behind championship leader and former World Supersport Champion Karl Muggeridge.

Having secured a double victory here on the S 1000 RR in 2009, the veteran racer of 17 years felt confident on one of his favourite tracks, especially having qualified in pole position on the Saturday afternoon with a lap time of 1:19.292 – almost three-tenths of a second faster than his nearest challenger Stefan Nebel. His Dutch team-mate Barry Veneman qualified in fifth place and headed up the second row on the other alpha Technik - van Zon - BMW - S 1000 RR.

Temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius on race day didn’t make life easy for the two BMW riders or their machines, but Daemen stamped his authority right from the first race. The Belgian rider lead the race from start to finish, eventually crossing the chequered flag more than three-and-a-half seconds in front of second-placed rider Karl Muggeridge.

“I thought that Karl would be strong out there,” said Werner after his race one victory. “In fact, I thought there would be a big group of riders battling it out at the front, but there was only Karl who could keep up. I decided to try and shake him off and put in three fast laps of around one minute and 19 seconds. When I looked around, he was still there, so I really went for it and managed to increase my advantage, although I nearly fell off twice in the process!”

Although Muggeridge actually put in the fastest lap of race one, he couldn’t match Daemen’s overall race pace and ended up backing off the throttle to conserve his tyres and safeguard a second-place finish.

Daemen’s team-mate Barry Veneman had bad luck in the first race. Running in third position with the chance of a podium position, he encountered some difficulties with his gear selection on lap 11 of 17 and was quickly passed by several riders. However, the hard-charging Dutchman did manage to fight his way back up to fifth place and earn 11 vital championship points in the process.

In race two, a crash by Muggeridge brought out the red flag, resulting in a two-part race that would be decided over 12-laps. However, this second-leg only lasted for four laps when Suzuki rider Gabor Rizmayer crashed in a dangerous place, breaking his foot in the process, as well as his GSX-R1000 catching fire. As Daemen had been leading prior to the crashes, victory was awarded to the Belgian on his S 1000 RR, who also secured the fastest lap of race two. Barry Veneman finally got his wish of a podium finish, ending up in third place.

All in all, it was a very successful weekend for team alpha Technik van Zon. One pole position, two race wins, a fastest lap by Daemen and a podium for Veneman means that the BMW team is now leading the Manufacturers Standings by 28 points over KTM, with Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki rounding out the top five.

Daemen’s double victory also sees him close the gap to just nine points behind IDM championship leader Muggeridge, with Veneman in fourth position in the points standings. And last but not least, Daemen’s success at Salzburgring means that the 38-year-old has won the last five consecutive IDM races at the Austrian circuit – four of them on the BMW S 1000 RR.

The next round of the 2010 IDM German Superbike Championship will take place on the first weekend of August at the Schleizer triangle.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport back in Brno

brno1

Following a successful weekend at Misano a couple of weekends ago, where BMW Motorrad Motorsport achieved its first ever pole position and Troy Corser secured his second podium of the year, the team is heading to the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic for round 9 of the 2010 Superbike World Championship.

Following the team’s best performance to date and full of confidence, Troy Corser is relishing a return to the Brno circuit, where he has enjoyed more WSBK victories than any other rider (with three wins to date). Furthermore, this is also the track where he achieved his best result (5th) in 2009 for BMW Motorrad Motorsport.

Troy Corser: “I am feeling really positive about Brno. Misano was a great weekend for me and the team because we made another step closer to the top guys. We could have won the first race if it hadn’t been for a small mistake on my part. We didn’t expect to be as strong as we were. Brno was a best result last year with a fifth position so we know it’s a track that favours the S 1000 RR. We have made huge steps since then in terms of development, which means we are going there even stronger. I really like the circuit and I think we have the package to be really strong.”

Following a two-day test in Imola, where Ruben Xaus was the seventh fastest rider overall on his S 1000 RR, the likeable Spaniard is determined to convert this speed into results at the Czech Republic’s flowing circuit.

Ruben Xaus: “I hope we can have a positive weekend in Brno. Last year I sustained a painful injury following a crash there which prevented me from pushing as much as I would have liked. We want to put in a good performance this weekend and draw a line under the disappointment of last year. For me, it is crucial that I find my rhythm in the coming races. The bike is getting better and better, and the power is really strong, which should help us at a fast track like Brno. It is important that I make another step forward and focus on riding smoothly, as there are many long turns.”

For Director of BMW Motorrad Motorsport Berthold Hauser, the enormous progress made so far in 2010 is plain for all to see. The team already has more points (152) after eight rounds of the series in the Manufacturer standings than it did for the entire 2009 season. Troy Corser holds a strong sixth position on the leaderboard – only nine points behind the fourth placed rider. With five rounds and 10 races of this year’s series remaining, anything can still happen.

“In Misano we achieved our first ever pole position and our second podium finish of the season,” said Hauser. “We have finished in the top five seven times already this season, the latest tests in Mugello, Misano, and then in Imola have been promising, and the race weekend in Misano was a great result for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team. I am confident that we can build further in Brno and put in another strong performance.”
